{"id":3109676,"date":"2026-04-06T11:17:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T18:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/?p=3109676"},"modified":"2026-04-06T15:25:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T22:25:47","slug":"tesla-actually-smart-summon-nhtsa-investigation-smart-parking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/06\/tesla-actually-smart-summon-nhtsa-investigation-smart-parking\/","title":{"rendered":"Why safety regulators closed their investigation into Tesla&#8217;s remote parking feature"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. auto safety regulators closed its investigation into Tesla&#8217;s remote parking feature, known as &#8220;Actually Smart Summon,&#8221; after finding crashes were rare, at low speed, and not severe.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said <a href=\"https:\/\/static.nhtsa.gov\/odi\/inv\/2024\/INCLA-PE24033-87838.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in its update<\/a> on Friday that its closing of the investigation does not constitute a finding that a safety-related defect does not exist and said it can reopen it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remote parking feature, which was released via a software update in September 2024, allows owners to use their Tesla app to direct the vehicle to drive itself to them at low speeds, using only the car&#8217;s cameras. The release was notable at the time because the previous version, Smart Summon, also used ultrasonic sensors, which are no longer on newer Tesla vehicles. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"speakable-summary\">The NHTSA <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/07\/feds-investigate-teslas-actual-smart-summon-after-several-crashes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opened the investigation<\/a> in January 2025 after reports of dozens of crashes involving the \u201cActually Smart Summon&#8221; feature. The investigation found that out of millions of Summon sessions, a fraction of 1% resulted in an incident, which typically involved minor property damage like hitting gates, parked cars, or bollards.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were also &#8220;no reported incidents involving a vulnerable road user, injury, fatality, or major property damage as indicated by an air bag deployment or vehicle tow away,&#8221; according to the report.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NHTSA found that either the person or the system using the app failed to fully detect surroundings, often due to limited visibility in the app&#8217;s camera view.
