The social network giant said Thursday that it is now applying these guidelines internationally for teen accounts. The development comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/03\/31\/meta-was-finally-held-accountable-for-harming-teens-now-what\/\">Meta was held accountable for harming teens<\/a> by courts in New Mexico and Los Angeles last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea behind this enforcement was that Instagram would show less content with themes like extreme violence, sexual nudity, and graphic drug use. The company would also hide or not recommend posts with strong language, certain risky stunts, and posts showing marijuana paraphernalia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also has a new setting called <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/10\/14\/instagram-defaults-to-pg-13-content-for-teens-adds-more-parental-controls\/\">&#8220;Limited Content&#8221;<\/a> that has stricter content filters to prevent teens from seeing, leaving, or receiving comments under posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust like you might see some suggestive content or hear some strong language in a movie rated for ages 13+, teens may occasionally see something like that on Instagram, but we\u2019re going to keep doing all we can to keep those instances as rare as possible. We recognise no system is perfect, and we\u2019re committed to improving over time,\u201d the company said <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/04\/instagram-expands-teen-accounts-inspired-by-13-content-ratings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, when Meta rolled out these restrictions, it marketed them as PG 13-inspired limits. However, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) sent a cease-and-desist letter, demanding that Meta stop using the term, claiming that a movie rating system can&#8217;t be compared with social media content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta seems to have moved away from the branding since then. In the latest blog post, the company acknowledged that, &#8220;there are differences between movies and social media&#8221; and said that the ratings reflect settings that feel closer to the &#8220;Instagram equivalent&#8221; of a movie rated appropriate for teens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta has been <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/03\/24\/new-mexico-just-handed-meta-its-first-courtroom-defeat-over-child-safety-and-the-rest-of-the-country-is-watching\/\">consistently<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/03\/25\/jury-finds-meta-and-youtube-negligent-in-landmark-social-media-addiction-trial\/\">scrutinized<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/03\/02\/instagram-tracked-growing-usage-while-targeting-teens-lawyers-argue\/\">prioritizing product growth while ignoring teen mental health<\/a>. The company has been on the defensive, such as launching new controls and limits to potentially reduce harm for teen users. In the past few months, the company has launched a way to notify parents if <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/26\/instagram-now-alerts-parents-if-their-teen-searches-for-suicide-or-self-harm-content\/\">teens are searching for self-harm content<\/a>, introduced new <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/10\/17\/meta-previews-new-parental-controls-for-its-ai-experiences\/\">parental controls for its AI experiences<\/a>, and paused teen access to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/01\/23\/meta-pauses-teen-access-to-ai-characters-ahead-of-new-version\/\">AI characters while it works on a new version<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, court filings revealed that Meta waited for years to roll out <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/24\/instagram-head-pressed-on-lengthy-delay-to-launch-teen-safety-features-like-a-nudity-filter-court-filing-reveals\/\">a feature like automatically blurring explicit images in direct messages<\/a> while being aware of the issue for years. The company&#8217;s latest step to expand content restrictions for teens internationally could be a preventive step, as the social network may face additional scrutiny across various regions around its practices to protect children following the legal cases in New Mexico and Los Angeles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Instagram
